I've written a FireFox extension that was based on the existing BBcode extension. It enables forum-specific mark-up commands in the background menu, when editing a message.

The FF 1.0 version can be installed from the official Mozilla update site

Some minor bugfixes, and a new "break-quote" feature. Sadly no longer available from the official Mozilla update site
